Borders - Abbeys Way
This
walk will take us through the Scottish border country on a circular route of 65
miles taking in the 12th century abbeys of Melrose (1136), Kelso
(1128), Dryburgh (1150) and
Jedburgh (1154), these were the main Cistercian & Augustinian abbeys that
survived after the first short lived Tironian abbey of Selkirk (1113).
We follow
paths, tracks and the River Tweed to pass Abbotsford, the ancestral home of Sir
Walter Scott, then onto open country and forest trails to join the River Teviot,
along the walk we will also pass the horse cave where it is said that Bonnie
Prince Charlie hid his horse from the English in 1745, the area abounds with
history with connections to literature, science and art.
The scenery
around this part of
Scotland
is stunning with views at every turn, and the welcome just cannot be beaten.
For the week
we will be staying in
Melrose
hostel, a former Georgian mansion overlooking the abbey, with multi bed rooms
for our sole use with breakfasts and packed lunches included.
For the
walks we will be using a minibus to the start and back to the hostel, evening
meals are not included but there are plenty of local eateries to sample the
area’s varied cuisine.
