St Cuthberts Way

This is a journey through the life and times of St Cuthbert, a week long 62 mile walk through the highly varied scenery of the Scottish border country.

We start as St Cuthbert did at Melrose Abbey from where we head south east to pass the ruins of Dryburgh Abbey on the banks of the river Tweed, we then follow the Roman Dere Street to cross the river Teviot  to Jedburgh with its imposing abbey, turning east past Cessford Castle the next stop is Kirk Yetholm nestling at the foot of the Cheviot Hills, the end, or start, of the Pennine Way.

The wilder part of the walk takes us over the Cheviots to the market town of Wooler, turning north east we are now heading towards the coast, after passing St Cuthberts cave overlooking the sea we descend to cross the tidal causeway to the final resting place on Lindisfarne with its ruined abbey and castle.

To get to the start and return from each days walk we will be using mini bus transport, so no need to carry lots of kit, the accommodation will be in a local hostel on a bed and breakfast basis with packed lunches each day, with rooms for our sole use, the hostel is now privately owned and is of a very good standard, plenty of hot showers and a lounge area, even a barbecue if the weather permits.

Evening meals are not included but there are plenty of local options with good food and a warm welcome assured, we usually have a meal after the days walk giving us a chance to sample the variety of the area.

The mini bus can pick up from the nearest station and return there at the end of the week.

The walking should be within the capability of anyone with a reasonable level of fitness.
